Material Process
An Online Exhibition
About the Call
Site:Brooklyn is pleased to open submissions for "Material Process", a juried exhibition examining how artists embrace, utilize, and transform the inherent properties of their materials. From the controlled chance of Leonardo da Vinci's sfumato technique, where paint layers interact to create atmospheric effects, to the intentional oxidation in Japanese patina work, artists have long understood materials as active collaborators. Twentieth-century innovations accelerated these explorations and made them self-conscious: Jackson Pollock's drip paintings reveal successive paint layers, while Richard Serra's lead splash pieces are formed by molten metal meeting architectural spaces.
This exhibition seeks to showcase contemporary artists who continue this dialogue, demonstrating how process-based approaches integrate artistic vision with material exploration. We are looking for works across all mediums, the exhibition highlights artists who utilize materials as creative partners, allowing their inherent properties to guide and inform the artistic outcome. These works should aim to reveal the compelling results that emerge when artists collaborate with, rather than merely manipulate, their chosen materials.
